I don't quite grasp "gelingen" here. Are they saying that the hard and soft tissue was kept intact? TIA for helping me clear this up.

: Right you are, Edith. Forgive my hair-splitting about the tissue bit - actually, they are saying that the impact on the intact hard and soft tissue was minimal (apparently there wasn't much of it left).
