Dutch term

meubelen met karakter

Non-PRO Dutch to English Marketing General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters furniture
Dit zijn meubelen met karakter.
(From a web site of a company that delivers ready-to-assemble furniture B2B.)

Anyone a nice suggestion? :)
Change log

Dec 21, 2014 22:02: writeaway changed "Field" from "Other" to "Marketing" , "Field (specific)" from "Furniture / Household Appliances" to "General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters"

Dec 21, 2014 22:03: writeaway changed "Field (write-in)" from "(none)" to "furniture"

Dec 21, 2014 23:11: Natasha Ziada (X) changed "Level" from "PRO" to "Non-PRO"

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (3): philgoddard, Michael Beijer, Natasha Ziada (X)

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Great Furniture with Great Characteristics is a manipulative tool
in Characteristic Discussions,
such as this one

I can'r keep up with it, when the chair I sit on doesn't fit my ... :))
Richard Purdom Dec 22, 2014:
Discussion with character, characteristic discussion, characterful discussion, markedly expressive of character or just typical?
freekfluweel Dec 22, 2014:

Richard Purdom Dec 22, 2014:
Drop the 'with' Don't literally translate this.
Go with Michael's 'distinctive furniture'. That won't work with the last few sentence, you need some sort of intensifier such as 'This really is distinctive furniture.'
Sarah van der Sterren-de Valk (asker) Dec 22, 2014:
You're right, Michael. Problem is, I don't have much to go on either. It's just some short pieces of text. This section contains only the following:

Meubelen met karakter
Met houtdessins in uiteenlopende kleuren - nauwelijks van echt te onderscheiden - sluiten onze meubelen perfect aan op het tijdsbeeld van vandaag. Kijk eens hoe de scheuren en nerven in het dessin zorgen voor een prachtige authentieke look. En wat te denken van de warme grijstinten en modieuze unikleuren? Dit zijn meubelen met karakter.

Pretty meaningless WITH context, if you ask me! ;) Oh well, I'll guess I'll have to stick with 'furniture with character' anyway. Maybe that is just as meaningless as the original... ;)
Michael Beijer Dec 22, 2014:
@Sarah: It might not be possible due to NDAs, etc., but if we knew exactly what kind of furniture it was we might be able to come up with a more passende vertaling. As things stand, all we know is that it's flat pack furniture, sold business-to-business. That's not much to go on.

"met karakter" and "karaktervol" are actually pretty meaningless terms without more context ;)
Sarah van der Sterren-de Valk (asker) Dec 21, 2014:
@Natasha: That's not just 'my' judgement, that's simply not what is intended in the text. It's not "maatwerk". I was simply explaining that, because that is why the options with 'unique' are not suitable.
Natasha Ziada (X) Dec 21, 2014:
Just be aware of not letting your judgement get in the way. Whether you find the company's furniture unique or not is irrelevant; you're translating their website so if that's how they sell their products you need to follow that.
Kirsten Bodart Dec 21, 2014:
Normally 'met karakter' means something like wood patterns, cosy feel, rustic and that kind of thing (think mountain hut in the snow with wood stove burning or country house in England). You'd translate that with 'with character', I think.
Sarah van der Sterren-de Valk (asker) Dec 21, 2014:
It's just that I didn't like the sound of "furniture with character" (please correct me if I'm wrong...). And I was leaning towards something with "unique", but although the customer can choose between different doors and wood patterns, I feel this kind of furniture will never be unique (my husband works in the industry, what he makes is really unique ;)). That's why I asked for some suggestions.
writeaway Dec 21, 2014:
Any suggestions of your own? Since you can see the entire text, you will know best what fits. This isn't exactly difficult

furniture with style

furniture with (its own) style

although if you use 'its own', it can have a subtly negative effect

Thank you, Natasha!
disagree Terry Costin : In dat geval, hoe zou jij meubelen met stijl en karakter vertalen?

met stijl en karakter? Pile it up! I would do "furniture with distinctive styling" to keep it simple.
agree Barend van Zadelhoff : I do think this is a legitimate option. This is about furniture and marketing speak. I don't think 'character' is a good option, see Kirsten Bodart's observation.

Als het 'authentieke' element centraal staat, is deze vertaling waarschijnlijk minder passend.
