French term

épandage

French to English Bus/Financial Environment & Ecology environmental accidents
Hi, I have seen many references to épandage in the context of spreading/spraying (i.e. of fertilizer, manure or crops) but in this context I believe it means 'spillage' - can anyone confirm this please? The document relates to a company's HSEQ audit and the sentence is as follows:

Many thanks
Louisa

Discussion

Louisa King (asker) Sep 9, 2014:
Hi, thanks for the responses so far. I think it is spillage because the document as a whole is about forming strategies for crisis management, in particular as regards environmental accidents and risks. For example, later in the text we have: ...les principaux risques environnementaux auxquels le site est soumis (épandage et inondation). 'Spreading' to me indicates a deliberate action whereas 'spillage' is accidental.
mchd Sep 9, 2014:
Duncan Moncrieff Sep 9, 2014:
Following on from the three answers that have been posted, is the "épandage" supposed to be one that is deliberate or accidental/unwanted. I'm taking it to be an accidental one, but confirm might clarify the matter. :)
Duncan Moncrieff Sep 9, 2014:
Why spillage in this case? Ok, you believe it means spillage. Why? What does the company do that could cause a spillage that would result in an environmental incident?

spillage

Here's a couple of examples that suggests "épandage" is being used to mean "spillage":

neutral Gabrielle Leyden : it would appear to be a SIMULATION of an accidental spillage, right?

Yes, the question was can you use "épandage" in this way. My refs show that "épandage" can be used for non-intentional spillages.

accidental spillage

If you mean 'épandage accidentel' (it looks like this is what you mean), then I have seen this quite often.

Thank you for your input, David

neutral Francis Marche : "spillage" (or "spill") is "déversement" in French (e.g. oil spill = déversement d'hydrocarbures)

disagree B D Finch : Not necessarily spraying. "Epandage" is also used for muck spreading and spraying is generally "arrosage".

I realise spreading is ambiguous!
Maybe qualify it if the intended meaning is "spreading got out of hand"?

Uncontrolled spreading might work?
