Muti come i pesci

Italian to English Marketing Tourism & Travel Hotel website
Muti come i pesci

Angela Guisci Jul 27, 2014:
@ Therese .... it's better " a world where silence reigns " but the source text says " muti come i pesci " and " per cui sono vietate tutte le attività che possono disturbare i pesci." so i think that " silent like a fish " is the best solution...
Therese Marshall (asker) Jul 27, 2014:
@all On second thoughts, I believe that Gad's solution is the best - it fits the context like a glove! Thanks to everyone!
Therese Marshall (asker) Jul 27, 2014:
@all Personally, I had to opt for "as mute as a fish" (singular) as later on in the text it refers to the fact that all activities that could possibly disturb fish in the local natural reserve are forbidden. Thanks to all of you for your valuable contributions
Janice Giffin Jul 27, 2014:
@Therese I presume it is the place that is so silent from your context. Then why muti (plural)? I also agree with writeaway that silent as the grave gives a gloomy cast to a beach on a protected reserve.
writeaway Jul 27, 2014:
What are your own suggestions?? Are you also going for a literal, gloomy translation or are you being more creative and upbeat? What do you have so far?

quiet as the tranquil sky

Attributed to Henry W Longfellow. Seems more in line with the description of a peaceful landscape.

agree writeaway : best to get away from the doom & gloom, dead as a doornail imagery since the idea is supposedly to entice people to go there

fish aren't mute though

As a quick look at e.g. Google will show:
Do fish make noise and if so what does it sound like?

Yes lots of fish make noises., in fact thousands of species do. They are not audible to us because they are low frequency and usually in water.. The Doradidae, or Talking catfish which includes the common Raphael catfish make noises you can hear. They make a noise by pulling their pectoral fins into the socket making a squeak. The ir more famous noise comes from contracting a muscle that runs from their skull to the swim bladder. This produces a grunt which you can hear if you take one out of the water for a brief time. The noise is a distress signal, roughly equivalent to the human word "help!" The salt water fish called a Grunt gets it name from distress noise it makes as well.

More recently, it has been found that cichlids make up to 12 different noises.and as of this year, in Lake Victoria cichlids the noises were proven to be species specific, meaning there are hundreds of variations of the 10 or 12 basic noises cichlids make.Cichlids have two sets of teeth, including a set in their throat and in conjunction with their gills and swim bladders they make these noises with air and water.

The noises have been categorized as grunts, squeaks, knocks drumming, tapping, booming, croaking, growling, snorting and a few others.

Mystery hum keeping people awake may be love-making fish

Midshipman male fish let out a distinctive drone to let females know they are searching for a mate.

The noise can go on for hours and often increases in volume as competing males attempt to out-hum each other. The noise can also be amplified by the sound bouncing off buildings and ships. ...
Earlier this month New Forest District Council and the Environment Agency launched a joint investigation to identify the cause of the humming after people complained of going to the doctor to ask for sleeping tablets or because they thought they had tinnitus.

The National Oceanography Centre in Southampton was unable to shed any light on the mystery.

However, the Scottish Association for Marine Science claimed fish could be responsible for the bizarre buzzing sound. ...
