I've found all kinds of translations for *Hub* but none seem to be related to absorbing energy in a collision with a car....Anyone any ideas?

Sounds like the max. amount of deformation permitted when the 'Einrichtung' absorbs a crash (as the term 'Unterfahren' is used, the crash is most likely to be from the side, i.e. horizontal movement).
BTW: search the glossary for 'unterfahr' if you need some suggestions for Unterfahren.
