Spanish term

Comisariatos

Non-PRO Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Petroleum Eng/Sci pools (groups) of depreciable assets
This is from a table containing various groups of depreciable assets operated by a large oil & gas producing company (Venezuela).

GROUP: “EDIFICIOS Y CONSTRUCCIONES” >> Subgroup: “Edificaciones” >> Subsubgroup: “Almacenes” >> ASSET DESCRIPTION: “Materiales/comisariatos.” THis is the word “comisariatos” that beats me.

¡Muchas gracias de antemano!

Discussion

lugoben Apr 21, 2014:
Asker Comisariatos were shops to sell food and clothes to people that worked in the oil industry or belong to the military. There were not shoppettes of sorts as they were managed by the industry. In fact they were bigger than a Venezuelan supermarket. If commissaries are as big, they may apply as translation. The idea was to sell the items at a cheaper rate that you found elsewhere. There may not be any of these left nowadays.

Stores

These are stores set up by petroleum companies (for example) in the production fields where employees can buy at a reduced price, bare necessity items which they would otherwise have to leave the camp and drive to the nearest town to buy but chances are they would not find. According to rae: "Almacén establecido por una empresa o institución para vender entre sus miembros sus productos a un precio más barato." According to my experience: "Employee convenience store at discounted prices"

Hope it helps! :0)
Note from asker:
It does help, indeed! And makes perfect sense--similiar to comissaries & PX shops on millitary bases. THANK YOU, Phoenix III!
Colleagues, I’d love to award kudoz to both answerers—to Phoenix III for putting me on the right track substance-wise and also to philgoddard for giving a more precise translation format-wise, but the system wouldn’t let me… !Gracias también a Lugoben!

commissaries

Thanks to Phoenix 3 for the Spanish definition, but I feel "stores" is too imprecise.

Commissary

1. A store that sells food and supplies to the personnel or workers in a military post, mining camp, lumber camp, or the like.
2. A dining room or cafeteria, especially one in a motion-picture studio.
Note from asker:
Sure, smth. smaller than what "stores" imply, a "shoppette" of sorts. MANY THANKS for your input!
