El ensaye de Phicometro es una prueba de campo donde se somete al subsuelo a un estado de esfuerzos en corte directo, utilizando una sonda que se introduce dentro de un barreno previamente perforado. Durante la prueba se registra la variación del volumen de la sonda con respecto a la presión inducida y al diámetro expandible para la calibración de la membrana, con estas curvas se puede encontrar el contacto de la sonda con el suelo y posteriormente al incrementar la presión y a su vez con la fuerza de extracción, se obtiene la envolvente de falla para estimar la ley de resistencia del material.

While the pressuremeter test provides direct information about the soil stiffness in terms of the Ménard Modulus and indirect information about the shear strength in terms of the limit pressure (Ménard 1957, Gambin 1995), the phicometer test yields directly the shear strength by means of the phicometer friction angle i and the phicometer cohesion c¡. As it is shown in this paper, it represents an economic and efficient instrument with respect to subsoil exploration especially for large-scale explorations like for infrastructure constructions.
