What does 'the clause purported to confer a benefit on him' mean?
"purported" is a way of saying that something claims or is supposed to do or have done something. But the person using that word is, if not sceptical, is at least not asserting that indeed (in this case) a benefit has been conferred. To confer mean, roughly, to give to. So that phrase could be rendered as "the clause is supposed to give him a benefit"
