Portuguese term

uma razão sensível

Portuguese to English Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting sculpture / public art / philosophy
Hi. This is in a text about the work of a sculptor. The paragraph that precedes this one discusses his upbringing in Italy, and the influence of classical art on his development. I'm really stuck on this phrase - I've toyed around with ideas such as 'aesthetic logic' 'material' 'rationale' etc etc. I'm aware that the concept of 'sensible reason' exists in philosophy, but I'm not sure the adjective 'sensible' would be very clear here. All thoughts much appreciated - it's the kind of phrase I come up against a lot as an art translator, but every now and then it seems particularly hard to translate!

'Formou assim um espírito plástico bebendo nos exemplos dos clássicos, que se tornaram seus paradigmas. Nas origens dessa consciência cultural, encontrou ainda os signos simbólicos para as metáforas da sua poética e uma razão sensível para as suas criações.
«Para mim o triângulo é a forma que simboliza a razão, o pensamento racional.[...]» (the text goes on to discuss the particular relevance of the triangle for him.

many thanks

Discussion

Lucy Phillips (asker) Oct 2, 2013:
Teresa, I think that link is sensible in the sense of sensato - which is the way that sensible is usually understood in English. Tobias, I think discernible might work, I'm still mulling on it in context - sensível has so many connotations. Thanks for all thoughts.

motivating reason Sensível may be translated as emotive; in this context, I think motivating best conveys the meaning. (Raison d'être is good, too).
Lucy Phillips (asker) Oct 1, 2013:
yes, I've used rationale a few times for razão/razões. I need an adjective to modify it here though

rationale - good
I would go for rationale...

3 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I think in the end the simplest solution works best - I have gone for tangible rationale. I'll post again if I get any feedback at the revision stage."

raison d'être

Italicized, that is.

Along the lines of Teresa's proposed "rationale."

Boa sorte.

reason-sensitive

The stress on reason-sensitive thought and inference can, however, blind us to the crucial
importance of a further dimension of human cognition. For human reason is tightly,
perhaps inextricably, interwoven with human emotion. Doing justice to this significant
interaction is one of the two major challenges for the next generation of Artificial
Intelligence models.
