Vibration generation in railway systems
The objective of the project is the investigation on the relationship between side-track vibration level and wheel and rail roughness.
This 3-years duration project has been co-funded by Torres Quevedo 2008 Subprogramme, included into the 2008-2011 R+D+i Spanish National Programme. FGC, the Catalonian railway infrastructure administrator, has been collaborating in the project.
During the project, several rail roughness measurements under different rail conditions were conducted along the Barcelona-Vallès line: new rails, rails under different wear conditions, and just before and after rail grinding. Therefore the usual rail roughness range was assessed. Likewise, the usual wheel roughness range was also assessed because wheel roughness measurements were performed before and after wheel reprofiling. These measurements were executed on a specific train of the Barcelona-Vallès line in order to have a “test train”.
In line with all these rail and wheel roughness measurements, vibration level at the tunnel wall were also registered. Thus, the vibration variation at the tunnel wall due to the rail and wheel roughness variation were experimentally assessed.
