Spanish term

IABD

Spanish to English Medical Medical: Health Care
This appears in a patient's medical history in the following context:

S.B.: Natural de UK; reside en la zone desde hace años con su mujer; lúcido e IABD.

I can't seem to find this acronym - any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Discussion

Isabel Adey (X) (asker) Oct 22, 2012:
Solution (somewhat late, sorry!) Thank you for your help everyone, but after checking with the client it would appear that it was indeed a typo, but for "IAVD", meaning that the patient is independent in his activities of daily living. See the following proz discussion: http://www.proz.com/kudoz/spanish_to_english/medical:_cardio... Thanks anyway!
MedPharm Oct 15, 2012:
I agree with Ron that one must first think about general description terms with regard to the patient in this context.
"I" could easily stand for "Individuo", then "Adulto Bien Orientado", but it does not fit well with "lúcido e.........................., then to repeat almost the same thing.
Ron Hartong PhD (X) Oct 15, 2012:
Just guessing, I admit, but when describing a patient's state, terms like 'alert' and 'well-oriented' are often used together with 'lucid'.
If you are willing to allow for typos (such as LABD instead of IABD - which BTW I find unlikely because of the preceding 'e' rather than 'y') maybe the acronym should be IABO instead of IABD. The ABO bit could than stand for 'alerta y bien orientado'.
The meaning of the initial I beats me though: impresión? inicialmente?

new additional references below on IABD @Joseph Tein

you have a point

it might be helpful if Isabel M Adey were to check back with her customer for clarification

in the meantime some additional references below with possible links between on the one hand intra-aortic balloon pump devices and on the other hand ischemic heart disease / saphenous vein grafts / right hemiparesis / motor aphasia

if IABD does turn out to mean ***Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump Device***, then this question would no longer come under the heading of the SP>EN language pair
Isabel Adey (X) (asker) Oct 13, 2012:
Alas, it doesn't seem to be possible to post a comment on the blog. I'm thinking that this could also be a typo, it's hard to tell because of the font used in the text. If anyone has an idea for 'LABD' that could be another possibility.
Isabel Adey (X) (asker) Oct 13, 2012:
Thanks! No, intra-abdominal infection doesn't fit in here. It appears in the patient's medical history and refers to the patient's baseline situation. The patient has a history of ischemic heart disease and underwent a bypass (saphenous graft) two years ago. He has been transferred to A&E from the ICU due to presenting right hemiparesis and motor aphasia and 'IABD' is the final comment made in the personal history. I'll try posting on the blog, thanks!
Joseph Tein Oct 12, 2012:
Posting on the blog ... sounds like a good thing to try.
philgoddard Oct 12, 2012:
Yes, that looks like the same thing. I thought of posting on the blog to ask what it stands for...
Joseph Tein Oct 12, 2012:
Another example I found this in another web page, but still can't figure out what the letters stand for. Obviously a routine phrase in the medical history. See: http://vidafj.blogspot.com/2010/03/interpretacion-de-las-pru... (in the Caso Clinico section).
MedPharm Oct 12, 2012:
More info providing some additional context details would help.

IADL [Incapable of/Impaired for Activities of Daily Living]

IABD - Incapacitado para las Actividades Básicas Diarias

It is not the most common way of expressing it, but I think it is a better fit than the other answer, especially in the context of that paragraph in a medical report.
