English Art/Literary Linguistics A Scotticism?
The regimental sergeant- major (Scots Dragoon Guards) to the bomb disposal operator
who is about to leave Iraq:
– Sa! – he barked – I’d heard you had had enough of us and were getting the f*** out of here!
[…]
– I still cannot believe it; I keep trying to understand how we could have stopped it . . .
The RSM stopped me in my tracks. – Sa. Don’t go down that route; don’t let your mind play those games.

Sir

this is probably a phonetic transcription of the way some soldiers clip off the end of the word.
My only hesitation is whether the RSM would call the bomb disposal guy "Sir". What are the hierarchical relationships?
Note from asker:
The guy was a captain so "sir" seems OK but later on the RSM says: - Aye, sir...
Peer comment(s):

agree Tony M : My first thought, too; but as you say, just what are the ranks involved here? / 'Sir' would be OK later, as it occurs in the unemphatic end position.

agree Charles Davis : The RSM is addressing a captain, who is his superior, so calls him "sir". It's pronounced "Sa" here in stressed position and "sir" in unstressed position ("Aye, sir").

Probably a nickname

I'd guess that it's a shortened form of the person's name or a nickname.

Sargent

Phonetically spoken, Sa could be short for Sergeant, a common rank among EOD specialists:

Peer comment(s):

disagree Tony M : Yes, but this is being barked by an RSM already; and the usual UK shortening of that would be 'sarge', I'm not convinced that even a Scot would make it this; doesn't really work for me phonetically... We now know he is a Captain

Ah I missed the update that he was a captain, thanks.
