Discussion

Martyn Greenan Aug 15, 2012:
It's important to take trixiemck's note into account. 'Octavos' actually means 'Round of 16' or 'Last 16', but there must be a mistake in the source text, as Argentina went out at the quarter-final stage.

bow out in the quarter finals

Hay un error en el original, ya que Argentina pierde en los cuartos (4-0 con Alemania) no en los octavos de final

Thanks, rich. Actually I just gave another option, but both Edward and Dariusz spotted the mistake. Not that I would have missed it... being sports crazy and Argentine, can't help but remember Germany ousted us in the quarters twice in a row
agree Neil Ashby : You like 'bow out' because it sounds like they went gracefully ;) (not 4-0)

Definitely, hahaha! Thanks, Neil.

Argentina then advanced to the round of 16 and played Mexico. The game started with controversy when Carlos Tévez headed a ball from Lionel Messi for a goal; replay clearly showed that Tévez was in an offside position. Eventually, Argentina beat Mexico 3–1 to advance to the quarter-finals. In a much-hyped game, Argentina was shocked after Germany thrashed them with a 4–0 win. Thomas Müller opened the scoring in the third minute, Miroslav Klose earned a brace, and Arne Friedrich netted a goal as well. Their 4–0 loss to Germany marked the end of Argentina in the World Cup.

No, I mean "knocked OFF". ;-) Although your suggestions, obviously, are lexicogrammatically more "kosher", mine are commonly used in colloquial US English.
agree Marcelo González : just as other options, of course; "gets" is perfectly fine (IMO). Cheers :-) >is eliminated (US) / are eliminated (UK)

And it's necessary to remember that a group of individuals (a football team) is colloquially referred to in the third person plural, rather than the singular, i.e. "argentina were knocked out" (see above).

Reference:

octavos de final

Octavos de final is not the quarter-final round (8 competitors) but the round before (16 competitors).
The quarter-final round is called cuartos de final in Spanish.

In English, the round in which only eight competitors remain is generally called the quarter-final round; this is followed by the semi-final round in which only four are left, the two winners of which then meet in the final or championship round. The round before the quarter finals is sometimes called the "Round of Sixteen", "Last Sixteen", or (in South Asia) "pre-quarter finals"; in some other languages "eighth-finals".
