Discussion

Md Abu Alam Aug 8, 2012:
What’s fact is more important than what I think or guess. We all should accept documentary proof as this is logical. I cannot know if I just pretend to know without going through real study or research. I indeed would like to depend on proof, especially while making comments on languages other than my mother tongue as I believe that I’m not more Christian than the pope. I’d like to say what I see, calling a spade- a spade. And finally I’d like to stop the debate here.
keshab Aug 8, 2012:
To Mr. Md. Abu Alam I think there is no need to thanks the asker for choosing an answer! Most of the site users are professionals and they will pick the answer of their choice without waiting for the lucky answerer's gratitude! Of course the answerer is awarded with kudoZ points. It is different matter that in future the asker will use the word and will face the proofreaders question: how clinician becomes health conscious or health worker?? It is his choice. I can only say that a nurse is not a clinician normally. But in remote area if a nurse does the doctor's duty, she may be called Clinician there. But all these are arguments for English language. In Bengali, স্বাস্থ্যসেবী can not stand for 'Clinician' anyway.
Md Abu Alam Aug 8, 2012:
The asker is quite a professional and knows very well the words ‘চিকিৎসক’, ‘ডাক্তার’ and ‘রোগ-বিশেষজ্ঞ’ and he was searching a suitable word for his texts as he wrote, “যুতসই বাংলা খুঁজে পাচ্ছিনা”. I tried to provide him a suitable word and he accepted that. Moreover my suggestion wasn’t at all baseless as per my discussions and indeed supported by documents I provided.
Md Abu Alam Aug 8, 2012:
Like all other professional translators, you know very well that, a word can be translated in so many ways and any of these could be suitable for texts used by a particular user. Clinician is also a word like this that can be used in so many cases and you cannt confine it to just “specialists”.
If you visit http://www.thefreedictionary.com/clinician , you will find (for clinician)

1. A health professional, such as a physician, psychiatrist, psychologist, or nurse, involved in clinical practice, as distinguished from one specializing in research.
2. A health professional who practices at a clinic.

Even if you visit http://medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/clinician you will find (for clinician)

A health care professional–physician, physician assistant, or nurse–involved in active Pt management.

All of these indicate that even a nurse could be called a “clinician” and obviously it’s “স্বাস্থ্যসেবী” that can accomodate these health related professionals.
Md Abu Alam Aug 8, 2012:
Thanks once again for your discussion, but you are absolutely wrong regarding the word “সেবী” that not only indicates to “সেবনকারী”, but also to “সেবাদাতা”. That’s why you can be “সেবী” while serving others. You also mentioned two of such words- “স্বেচ্ছাসেবী” and “সমাজসেবী” and words like “মানবসেবী” and others can also be added in the list. Apart from this, these words aren’t only used to indicate organizations, but also to mean individuals. For example-“তিনি একজন বিশিষ্ট সমাজসেবী।” In fact the prefixed words that accept “সেবী” aren’t only few, as you mentioned. Regarding emerging of these words your opinon is unacceptable for the following reasons:
1. There’s no sufficient evidence that these words emereged from newspaper.
2. Besides, a word can be emerged from newspaper and well accepted by the community and included in literature.
3. You can’t ignore newspapers while considering literature as in the present era newspaper helps a lot flourish literature.
keshab Aug 8, 2012:
For sake of discussion I take the word স্বাস্থ্যসেবক which literary means 'health servant' or 'health worker'. It stands in no way for a clinician or a doctor. A doctor or Clinician plays a vast role than a health worker. He examines, diagnoses and prescribes to cure a patient. Actually 'Clinician' stands for a specialist doctor who does clinical work and counseling of patients.
keshab Aug 8, 2012:
Actually সেবী means সেবনকারী, not সেবাদাতা। And this word and meaning exists in dictionary. if I want to serve for others I must be সেবক. I know there are few words like স্বেচ্ছাসেবী, সমাজসেবী, but all these words related to organization and all these words emerged from newspapers, not from grammer book or Bengali literature.
Md Abu Alam Aug 7, 2012:
To Mr Keshab Thanks for your opinion. There's no denying that all of us could be benefitted through this type of discussions. Certainly I welcome your comment, though my view is quite different for obvious reasons. Actually ‘স্বাস্থ্যসেবী’ doesn’t mean “one conscious about one's own health”. This may be expressed by “স্বাস্থ্য-সচেতন”. Besides, the word ‘স্বাস্থ্যসেবী’ isn’t at all imaginary. It consists of two words: ‘স্বাস্থ্য’ and ‘সেবী’. If one studies the grammer, one will find the way of constituting words like these. This is the stablished way for the derivation of words which enriches our vocabulary providing us so many words that may not be even found in the dictionary. One can also study Bengali literature deeply and one will then indeed find that ‘সেবী’, not ‘সেবক’ is used with prefixed nouns to form new words.

Thank you very much.
disagree keshab : স্বাস্থ্য-সেবী is not acceptable. this means one concious about one's own health, like তামাকুসেবী never offer তামাক except himself! It may be স্বাস্থ্য সেবক, which makes some sense. But all these words are imaginary, no existence of such words in reality.

disagree Kazi Raquibul Islam Jawhar : No such word in reality. It sounds odd. Being a doctor, I go with 'রোগ-বিশেষজ্ঞ' as the first preference.

It’s needless to mention that you are a doctor as this isn’t the assurance that you will make the best translation. Please explain why the word sounds odd.
disagree Lubain Masum : স্বাস্থ্য-সেবী is not accetable as translation of clinician for reasons mentioned by Keshab and Raquib.

চিকিৎসক/ ডাক্তার/ রোগ বিশেষজ্ঞ

Clinician is an expert in or practitioner of clinical medicine, psychology, etc. there is no term in Bengali for this word. But in practice, generally we call these professionals as 'doctor' or 'specialist for a particular disease'.

রোগ-বিশেষজ্ঞ/চিকিৎসক

'Clinician' এর সঠিক অনূদিত বাংলা নেই। প্রকৃতপক্ষে 'Clinician' একজন চিকিৎসক যিনি রোগীর শয্যা পাশে থেকে রোগ নির্ণয় ও চিকিৎসা করেন। Clinician - A physician whose treatment is based upon experience at the bedside.
যেহেতু 'Doctor' আর 'Physician' এর মধ্যে কিছু পার্থক্য আছে, সেক্ষেত্রে 'চিকিৎসক' বলাই উত্তম। তবে প্রথম পছন্দ অবশ্যই 'রোগ-বিশেষজ্ঞ'।
Peer comment(s):

disagree Md Abu Alam : You mentioned two words violating the KudoZ rules as both were mentioned by Mr Keshob before you. Besides, your explanation is contradictory as you wrote, “চিকিৎসক বলাই উত্তম” and “তবে প্রথম পছন্দ অবশ্যই 'রোগ-বিশেষজ্ঞ'”. These tussle with each other.

I didn't mention two words, but made alternative entries. 'চিকিৎসক' বলাই উত্তম is for doctor. And to go for 'Clinician', I said রোগ-বিশেষজ্ঞ প্রথম পছন্দ হওয়া উচিৎ। These are two separate meanings. You seem to like only gaining points, not for discussion.
