MariyaN (X) Jul 13, 2012:
Julian, they really have! I wouldn't have said it if I didn't know that from personal experience. Indeed, it is judgemental; although the majority of products would have it as "best before', "enjoy by" is not uncommon.
When in my answer I said that the former is especially frequently used in the US, I meant that it's more frequent in comparison with "best if eaten by", not that it is the most frequently used expression used for indicating the expiration date. I should have explained it better, sorry.

best quality/flavor

If this were just the 賞味期限, I think that Mariya's "enjoy by" would be perfect, but in this context we'll probably want to mix it up a bit for variety and to make it more natural. It would probably be best to not try to hard to stick to the structure of the original. For example (quick and dirty):

When unopened and stored according to the directions on the package, food eaten by the Best By date will retain maximum freshness. It is recommended you eat the food by this date for best flavor, but food can often still be consumed safely even after this date has passed.

Of course you'll want to alter the tone and how strict you stick to the original depending on the audience/context/etc.

agree Julian Rippon : Do American products really have an 'Enjoy by' date, rather than the UK 'Best before' date? Rather judgmental phrase! Anyway, I agree with your translation!

Thanks, Julian. In America, you'll have your food and enjoy it, whether you like it or not! ;)
agree Randi Simons (X) : I agreed with Tulip Bubble's response below before reading this... they're along the same lines. But this is a full translation and reads well.

Thanks, Randi!
agree mommamia : in this context, I agree with your suggestion. if it was 賞味期限alone, I'd go with "best if eaten/consumed by:".

Enjoy by/best if eaten by

特に、前者はアメリカでは食料品によく見られる表現です。

I suggest this phrase for おいしく(食べる)。

At its best

Another idea. I think おいしくin this case can mean "at its best." Consumers will enjoy the optimum flavor and texture of food if they eat it by the specified date, so-called "best before" or "best by date."

It indicates the date before which the product will be consumed at its best when it is unopened and stored according to the directions provided.

Did I need to translate the whole context?

I would not use the same phrase in the rest of the context. If the first sentence is wordy enough to explain why the food has a best before date, the second and third sentences can be simple. For example, "although food past its best before date will be safely consumed, enjoy it by the date."
