English term

self-sacrificing

English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
I need an adjective to describe a very tough dad who can leave what he believes in and his pride aside to help his son. This tough miner who is on strike, goes back to work although he knows he shouldn´t, he needs the money to help his son.

But is he? If he leaves "what he believes in and his pride aside to help his son", then he is putting his family's immediate needs before loyalty to his fellow workers and, possibly, before his own family's longer-term needs. That is hardly heroic or self-denying.

"Unselfish" and "selfless" are what come to mind.
Example sentence:

self-denying

Or self-abnegating. These, to me, come closest to capturing what this father is doing, not just selfless, but sacrificing his own desires in the interests of his son.
