English term

upstream/downstream facilities

English to Spanish Science Medical (general) Pharmaceuticals
The final product is manufactured using antithrombin prior to cold fractionation at three different fractionation facilities in the US and Austria, and a "downstream" facility in Belgium.

Per "upstream" fractionation facility at least 3 final container lots have been set down to monitor stability.

What do they mean by "upstream/downstream", the meaning I'm familiar with (i.e. aguas arriba, aguas abajo)
doesn't seem to make sense here.

Thank you all in advance for your valuable suggestions and explanations.

but we still need a workable solution

I agree that this sort of thing is "espantoso"

One way to look at it Hi Giovanni,

One way I can possibly understand this ... because it's not obvious to me in english either, is that they're talking about phases or stages of the production process. Upstream is the source of something, downstream is where it is sent. Maybe this idea will help along with the context you're working with. I hate these pharmaceutical manufacturing jobs, and never accept them! Good luck with this one.
