I think your guess is right, Deborah. This cloth must be simple and inexpensive (wealthy people back then could afford fancy quality fabrics from Europe). Монастырское only means that it was made by nuns in a convent (I don't know if monks in monasteries were involved, probably not), not any particular kind of cloth.

: Of course, it was made by nuns the weavers. It is good for any climatic condition as well - one particular quality of natural materials it was made of: it feels warm in the cold in it and it doesn't feel too hot in the warm.
