Italian term

trama reticolinica frammentata

Italian to English Medical Medical (general) liver biopsy
This is from a biopsy report of a patient with metastatic liver cancer:

"La lesione e costituita da epatociti con aspetti a cellule chiare disposti in grossolane trabecole con *trama reticolinica frammentata* e capillarizzazione dei sinusoidi.

I'm thinking of translating the words as "... having a fragmented reticular pattern ... " but I don't know if this is really what the Italian means, and I don't find any examples of this phrase in a Google search.

How would you translate this phrase in this context?

["capillarizzazione dei sinusoidi" is easy ... google offers it as a possibility as soon as I start to enter "capillarization of ... "]

Thank you for your help.

Discussion

SJLD Dec 29, 2011:
Bit tricky, and I'm not at all sure, but the term "trama" suggests to me that the normal reticular framework of the liver has been disrupted by the tumour. OR there has been damage to the reticular framework from other causes, e.g. cirrhosis.
Joseph Tein (asker) Dec 29, 2011:
Liver tissue Hi Sue,

This is a liver biopsy. (At the end the report -- translated -- says: "Findings are compatible with hepatocellular carcinoma.")
SJLD Dec 29, 2011:
Hi Joe Is this a lymph node or liver tissue?

fragmented reticular framework

"Framework" mi sembra concordi meglio con "trama" piuttosto che "fibers", in questo contesto.

... leading to the formation of nodules that compress the residual reticular framework...

It is always underlined by a basement membrane loosely constituted of irregular of fragmented reticular fibers; it frequently looses its homogeneous appearance ...

Come mi hanno fatto notare, cercando 'reticular framework' insieme a 'liver' si trovano parecchi riscontri, dunque il problema si presenta solo nel momento in cui al sintagma devi aggiugere un aggettivo, in questo caso 'fragmented'. Un altro aggettivo abbastanza ricorrente è 'collapsed', ma dal contesto non mi pare il caso; un altro, più valido a mio parere, potrebbe essere 'deteriorated', visto che non specifica quanto ampio sia il danno al fegato.

agree SJLD : I think this is the closest to the meaning, whether or not the collocation is found on the internet
