Italian term

manica a martello

Italian to English Other Textiles / Clothing / Fashion
"Cardigan in cotone nylon effetto fiammato. Tasche a marsupio. **Manica a martello** con cucitura nel giromanica a rilievo. Collo in piedi e cappuccio a scomparsa in tela di nylon con spalmatura interna color argento. Interno collo in tela nera con due cordini paralleli applicati. Tinto in capo."

I have seen the related question in the Kudoz glossary but I don't think it helps me really..

Anybody come across this? I have found some images googling this, but I'm still not sure what they're referring to.

Thanks!

Sarah

Discussion

Sarah Weston (asker) Dec 28, 2011:
I agree, but unfortunately this particular client never sends pictures. Goodness knows why. I think set-in sleeve is the most likely based on the images on google and the fact that we are talking menswear, however, I am waiting from a description or confirmation from the customer. Thanks very much to everyone for their input so far!
Yvonne Gallagher Dec 28, 2011:
yes, a picture would certainly help!
Audra deFalco (X) Dec 28, 2011:
Dolman and gigot sleeves are two completely different things. It is really important, I think, in this case that you ask the client for a picture. Otherwise you'll never know and won't be able to provide an accurate translation. Err on the side of caution here, I think.

set-in sleeve

Having looked at images of this I don't believe this is to do with width of sleeve but with how/where it's joined to garment.
set in as opposed to "raglan" where seam goes to neckline , this goes to shoulder with, rarely, an extra patch that goes across shoulder to neck. Have a look at the images for this.

set´-in sleeve` (sĕt´ĭn slēv`)
n. 1. A sleeve joined to the body of a garment by a seam starting at the edge of the shoulder and continuing around the armhole. Contrasted to a raglan sleeve.

dolman sleeve

Presumo sia questa. Da un dizionario sulla moda:

Lunga, dall'attaccatura molto larga, si stringe verso il gomito
http://www.logosdictionary.org/fashion/fashion_dict.view_def...

E la definizione di una "dolman sleeve":

a long sleeve that is very wide at the top and narrow at the wrist
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleeve

A full sleeve that is very wide at the armhole and narrow at the wrist.

Peer comment(s):

neutral Yvonne Gallagher : dolman sleeve "armhole" extends from shoulder to waist which does not seem to be at all the case here

This type of sleeve can be declinated in a number of styles - just see this picture: http://www.drjays.com/shop/P1160318/baby-phat/dolman-sleeve-...

Dolman sleeve - Cut as an extension of the bodice, the dolman sleeve is designed without a socket for the shoulder, creating a deep, wide armhole that reaches from the waist to a narrowed wrist. Also called a batwing sleeve.
manica alla Dalman: Tagliato come estensione della parte superiore dell'abito, della blusa o della giacca, questo modello è disegnato senza l'incavo per la spalla, creando di conseguenza un ampio giro-manica.

Gigot sleeve - (Also known as a leg-of-mutton sleeve ) a loose, full sleeve, rounded from the shoulder to just below the elbow, then shaped to the arm, often ending in a point at the wrist.
Lunga, molto gonfia all'attaccatura, dove viene cucita creando effetti di piccole pieghe. Si stringe verso il braccio e aderisce al polso.

Peer comment(s):

neutral Yvonne Gallagher : "leg-of-mutton" more common as name than gigot. Google images don't show this type at all here for "martello"//sorry, your image below is NOT a leg-of-mutton sleeve type. See definition you give above. These are full/puffy at top then narrow from elbow.

saddle sleeve

I went through several languages to get this one.

http://www.proz.com/kudoz/french_to_german/textiles_clothing...

Then I checked on some German sites, then I checked around for saddle sleeves and came upon this.

Maybe I'm right, maybe I'm wrong, but the last link is pretty informative.
