English term

bangers

Non-PRO Not for points English Other Food & Drink = sausages in US English?
The term "bangers" is sometimes used in the UK and in Ireland to describe "sausages", see for example here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bangers_and_mash

Does this meaning (bangers = sausages) also exist in US English?

Kim Metzger Sep 26, 2011:
The term banger is not used in the US to denote sausages, like the nice bready sausages served for breakfast in the UK and Ireland. But we do have delicious breakfast sausages.

Should clarify - bangers UK = sausages US but we also use sausages, it's just the US doesn't use bangers.

agree Charles Davis : The dictionary just says "sausage", but I think bangers are specifically the fat ones.

Oh yes, not those silly little viennas!
agree Jenni Lukac (X) : I heartily recommend the Mediterranean diet!

Well I actually eat only Quorn sausages these days owing to my cholesterol-beating diet ... don't know if they count as proper bangers!!!

Thank you!
neutral Cilian O'Tuama : bangers may be exclusively UKI, but sausages is not exclusively US. In fact, in Ireland we only really used the word bangers when referring to "bangers and mash", otherwise always sausages.

Sorry - I didn't mean sausages is exclusively US - I call them both too. It's just bangers is only used in the UKI as far as I know.

Thank you!
agree Tony M : I think the point is that they're known as sausages everywhere, but the colloquial 'banger' is only British, and then only in certain expressions, as Cilian has pointed out

Bratwurst Sausage (US variety)

Originally German based, but there are a type of brats that developed in the US that seem to resemble this. See reference link.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Joshua Wolfe : What you say is true, but I have never an American use the term 'banger' except to be droll or when quoting a Brit

Correct Joshua, this was more on reference to the sausage type. We don't use the word 'bangers' in reference to this in the US

Gang bangers often kill innocent people with little or no remorse, and unfortunately cops can be too lazy, corrupt, or indifferent to do anything about it. ...
