La personne des services secrets lui demande ce qu'il veut en échange.
L'homme répond : "Well, rather vulgarly, this is a fund-raising venture, so... half a million."
Comment traduiriez-vous ce "rather vulgarly" ? Peut-être faut-il tourner la phrase différemment de l'anglais pour trouver une traduction satisfaisante. Des idées ?

Je pense que le sens n'a rien à voir avec la vulgarité. L'explication donnée ("this is a fund-raising venture, so... half a million") n'est pas bien précise, et constitue un résumé maladroit des faits. "En gros" conserve cette idée d'imprécision.

: I'm afraid I don't agree with your argument; the speaker is saying that it's not polite to talk about money ('filthy lucre'), yet that's what he's going to do... it is of course totally ironic, since in this situation, 'politeness' is irrelevant!

est excellente et, à mon avis, de loin la meilleure !
Par contre le mot choquer n'est pas assez explicite à mon avis. Les personnes pour qui parler d'argent n'est pas tabou, et qui ne conçoivent pas que ça puisse l'être, risquent de "fail to see the point"
Par contre "au risque de vous paraître bassement matériel" est un peu longuet.
Normally, it is not considered very polite in England to speak about money (and remember the Biblical expression about 'filthy lucre') — one might have thought that the informant here might have had higher ideals, like requesting the release of political prisoners, etc. But no, he is going to be 'vulgar' and talk money...
Of course, there is nothing here of the other meaning of vulgar, meaning 'crude, obscene, smutty' etc.
