C'è chi opta per non tradurre nemmeno il termine, ma non in tutti i contesti questo è fattibile. In mancanza di un traducente esatto al 100%, opterei per un termine che spieghi più o meno di che tipo di libri si tratta, descrivendoli magari come 'taccuini' di appunti.
Un 'commonplace book' è infatti una raccolta di appunti personali, ritagli, poesie, annotazioni, schizzi, disegni e materiale vario che per una ragione o per l'altra vogliamo raccogliere e tenere da conto per nostro uso personale.
Ad esempio, lo 'Zibaldone' ( http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zibaldone ) di Leopardi può essere definito 'commonplace book' ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commonplace_book ) e in italiano rientra più o meno nella categoria dei taccuini di pensieri ( http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taccuino ).

Eviterei di chiamarli 'libri dei luoghi comuni' perché questa definizione ha in genere una connotazione negativa ('luoghi comuni' = 'stereotipi'), che non è applicabile a questo tipo di libro/taccuino.
Un 'commonplace book' è infatti una raccolta di appunti personali, ritagli, poesie, annotazioni, schizzi, disegni e materiale vario che per una ragione o per l'altra vogliamo raccogliere e tenere da conto per nostro uso personale.
