Spanish term

discretiza

Spanish to English Bus/Financial Business/Commerce (general) Occupational noise study
Text describing a study on occupational noise. For the UK

This term came up in the Proz glossary before (http://www.proz.com/kudoz/spanish_to_english/construction_ci... but I don´t think any of the suggestions fit this context. I've seen the word 'discretize' used, but I'm not convinced. Doesn´t seem to be used much in Spanish either.

Discussion

neilmac Apr 28, 2011:
The answer in the thread posted by Lisa WAS correct in THAT context, but I believe "discretize" is what is called for here. I'd confirm with the author/s if poss.
neilmac Apr 28, 2011:
It may not be used "much" ... and after translating/revising several published texts on fuzzy logic containing the term, I am still none the wiser of its meaning, having always been rubish at math. I'd just use "discretize" and press on. The author/s should know if the term is appropriate in their own specialist field.
philgoddard Apr 27, 2011:
Yes, those are good suggestions.
Hello Lisa The answer selected in that KudoZ thread seems appropriate to me.

just don't ask me to explain it in plain English!

Audiologists seem to be aware of the term:)

agree neilmac : If it walks like a duck. I sometimes have to revise/translate texts that contain this, although I don't really understand the term, this is what they use in Fuzzy Logic etc...

Thank you! Indeed.

agree philgoddard : Or acknowledges, or quantifies, or "as reflected in", or anything along those lines.

Yes, Thanks Phil.
agree Altogringo : with the concept but would definitely choose Phil's "as reflected by" option for more direct and understandable.

Thanks AG.
neutral liz askew : this term is not sufficiently scientific, and is too woolly. We are talking about audiometry here, which is a measuring instrument. Also, you have supplied no references whatsoever on such an important methodology.

I disagree with you.

turns into /approximates to a discrete number

The concept as explained is that the phenomenon (noise alteration) is continuous, but the measurement scale (Klockhoff classification in the text) is discrete. As suggested by Wendy, there is obviously the verb discretize, but I have never seen it used in this kind of context.
Peer comment(s):

agree neilmac : = "discretize"

If you want to avoid discretize, which has been suggested now anyway.
