I'm not sure, côté doesn't usually mean edge in that sense, but it seems the only likelt bet, really, doesn't it?

In the text you found (albeit translated EN > FR in the first place!), it mentions 'tranche' for the edge-on test; so your second occurrence remains somewhat ambiguous, it seems to me more likely that they have simply left out the word 'envers', to complete the doublet 'côté endroit / côté envers'

Well, we do actually say 'front side' and 'back side', but I think K's own solution of 'face test' is probably best anyway. / LOL!
