on a birth certificate would you say 'male' or 'of the male gender'?
the certificate has:
in (name of city)
è nato/a (name of child)
di sesso maschile
filgio di....
'Male' seems a bit too concise, though 'of the male gender' also sounds out of place here. Any suggestions?
There is already the same entry in Kudoz, but in a different context. Here, the words are on their own, not in a sentence.

sex: male
I've just dug out my own birth certificate, which has the categories Name and surname, Sex, Date of Birth, etc. with the word "Girl" typed in for the category Sex. As this is somewhat ungrammatical, I'd suggest sex (or Sex): male in your case.
