French term

se projeter de manière pertinente (dans l'entreprise)

French to English Social Sciences Human Resources
Hi

This is from appraisal guidelines. After the appraisal, the employee gets feedback from their manager, one of the purposes of which is to:

"lui [permettre] de se projeter de manière pertinente dans l'entreprise."

I can see what this is getting at (picturing their progress within the company) but am thrown by what to do with the "de manière pertinente" and general snappy phraseology.

Thanks in advance for your ideas!

prospects Agree more with Jeux de Mots' interpretation, yes. To help them figure out what prospects might exist for them within the company
Sandra Petch (asker) Mar 1, 2011:
I'm having second thoughts about my interpretation after seeing Jeux de Mots' suggestion. I could ask the client but sometimes they just don't answer queries...
Sandra Petch (asker) Mar 1, 2011:
If it's any help, for the minute I have: "see exactly where they fit in the company."
Sandra Petch (asker) Mar 1, 2011:
Clarification Thanks for all the input. "Se projeter" is a bit of a buzzword in this text and each time it clearly means "seeing where I fit" "seeing how I can progress" "seeing where I will be in five years." That is the meaning I'd like to convey.

to (see how one can) fully apply oneself within the company

I understand this to mean that the employee will be able to use the feedback to see how he can better apply himself (skills, knowledge, experience...) to increase his contribution to the success of the company.

An alternative would be:
"to see how one can best contribute to the goals/success of the company"

3 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks Jeux de Mots and everyone. I think this is more the meaning although I still have a small doubt. I'll raise a query when I send the translation. Anyway, my "final answer" is "position themselves effectively within the company." JdM certainly put me on this track. Thanks!"

French term (edited): se projeter de manière pertinente (dans l\'entreprise)

to conduct oneself in an appropriate manner (in the company)

This would be the phrase used in the business world.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Michel F. Morin : Si je retraduis cette proposition en français, cela donne "se conduire de manière appropriée", ce qui n'est pas équivalent à la question initiale...

neutral philgoddard : Michel is right, and I don't think this justifies a 5.

to get involved appropriately (in the company)

See Web.Ref. There is no single translation for "se projeter"! IMHO, dans le contexte proposé, "se projeter" doit être compris comme "s'impliquer" - therefore "to get involved".

to find his or her marks in the company (properly)

though of course it could mean: envisage the future within the company. Not clear at all.

Hello,

That's what I'd say.

You seem to understand the idea very well.

I hope it helps.

come away from the appraisal with a clear understanding of how he/she can effectively contribute...

I would say something like this...
One of the goals of the appraisal is for the employee to come away with a clear idea of how he or she can effectively contribute/a clear idea of his or role in the organization going forward...
