giunte o rotture

Medical: Pharmaceuticals
etichettatrice
from an instruction manual on using a labelling machine:
"Prelevare a ogni inizio e fine bobina dell’etichetta flacone (oppure in presenza di giunte o rotture della bobina) un campione dell’etichetta e applicarlo sulla tabella denominata..."
I don't really have a mental picture of what the text means by giunte e rotture. Any ideas?

splices or tears
I think it just means where there are any splices or tears in the spool.

Comment: "yes, thanks Marie-Hélène. I prefer splices to joints in this case!"

joints or tears
I think this refers to the tape. You do this when a new reel starts, but also or if there are joints or tears in the labelling tape.

Anthony, I imagine a joint is where two ends of labelling tape are glued together. That would probably cause problems for the tape to come out smoothly, which is why you would have to find a way to fix it...

Thanks, Shera Lynn, but what exactly is a "joint" in this context? |
