Spanish term

No entendemos una evaluación puntual

Spanish to English Medical Medical (general) Psychology
Hello again

I am still translating a psychologist's report about a patient who received a diagnosis for Depression and Anxiety disorder and Schizophrenia from another doctor and wishes to have a comprehensive assessment of her mental state from the psychologist at a later date.

Here is the context:

Thank you!

Discussion

Jorge Arteaga M.D. Feb 3, 2011:
I agree with you both, Liz and Otto. When the psychologist says "no entendemos" means "we don't agree with" (to me it is kind of an idiomatic expression used incorrectly). And when he/she says "evaluación puntual" means a short term evaluation (one or two sessions). So, the psychologist does not agree with (does not "understand") a short term evaluation.
Otto Albers (X) Feb 3, 2011:
"evaluación puntual" refers to, as Liz implies, short periods of assessment, whereas the specialist infers that a rather long follow up period should be indicated in order not to miss a diagnosis and harm a minor.
liz askew (asker) Feb 3, 2011:
Hi
I think this means an assessment made at a precise time, i.e. in a short period of time, rather than over months and months.

Note from asker:
Hello Jorge, interesting use of "entendemos" here...I haven't come across this before as meaning "recommending":) :) Gracias! Also, this psychologist writes very long sentences and the tenses are all over the place, aarrghh!

We don't mean a brief assessment Literally: We're not talking about...

The subtext is 'we don't agree with,' but the intended tone is not as strong as that.
