Oh, I see. I agree with Frank that if you do it repeatedly, it looks a mess. If you use the plural, that includes the possibility that there is only one.

Phil, it doesn't really matter where I ask the question, so I might as well ask it here. However, since I translate Dutch to English, I am simply curious what my colleagues feel about this subject. In addition, although English and Dutch might be the same in this respect, I think it might be more common among Dutch writers to add the "(s)" to the end of their words.

I don't see the point of this question. English is exactly the same as Dutch in this respect.

plural I prefer to avoid the brackets - they disturb legibility - and use the plural.

Is this what you mean? Of course base you answer your own question what base rate(s) is concerned...

You can of course add slashes: provider/providers, supplier/suppliers, etc. I still prefer the brackets...

I think it is a matter of preference that could be discussed with the client...

agree writeaway : steunverklaring is Dutch as well. afaik none of this particularly Belgian. and base rate looks suspiciously English. What a lot of terms for single (and unclosed) question!!!
