German to English Bus/Financial Business/Commerce (general)
Von 2000 bis 2005 legte das Geschäft um 15% zu. Das derzeitige Volumen beträgt 2,54 Milliarden Euro.
Es handelt sich hierbei um eine Finanzinstitution.

Wäre "volume" in diesem Zusammenhang richtig oder gibt es da einen anderen Ausdruck?

sales volume It may be my North American-ness speaking but I would change this: "Their current volume stands at 2,54 billion euros" to:
"They currently have 2.54 billion Euros in annual sales" or alternatively:
"They are currently doing 2.54 billion Euros in annual sales."

could be about anything volumen is very ambigious in business german to start with, so volume may or may not be right in english. if you want to be a role-model, maybe google 2.54 billiion euro + the name of the company and see what is really meant?

For what it's worth, I think either would do. I don't think Wendy's suggestion carries the risk of overtranslation. In this context, 'volume' and 'volume of business' mean exactly the same thing.

Yes Wendy, that makes sense! But since I cannot be 100% sure and do not want to "over-translate", would a simple "volume" still suffice in this case? So my main concern is: would native English speakers have any problem with this sentence, if I just left it at that?

It might sound a bit strange to a non-financial person, alright. You might want to use Wendy's excellent selection... or perhaps "volume of business"?

@Jaime So, "Their current volume stands at 2,54 billion euros" sounds ok to you? I am not a financial expert, so always end up getting caught with something small like this ;-)

In financial services... ... 'volume' or 'turnover' would seem appropriate. I'm not sure you need more context. You could use 'volume of activities' if you wanted.

@Brigitte: Mehr Kontext habe ich selbst nicht. Der Artikel setzt sich eigentlich mit einem anderen Thema auseinander. Das Unternehmen (welches eine Finanzinstitution ist) wird hier nur kurz in diesen drei Sätzen vorgestellt (der erste Satz besagt nur , dass das Unternehmen ein weltweit führender Anbieter bestimmter Dienstleistungen ist).

Ich nehme an ... "turnover" ist gemeint. Vielleicht passt auch "sales". Aber ohne Kontext lässt sich das schwer entscheiden.

'Volume' is the standard term in English too. The word "sales" is usually tacked onto it to clarify, but is not strictly necessary.

If, as you say, you're dealing with a financial institution "sales" is probably inappropriate.

business volume

IMO it is referring to the Geschäft in the first sentence and would normally be Geschäftsvolumen, which is not necessarily the same as sales (or indeed need not involve sales at all).

Sales capacity

I would argue the original German formulation hints this is what is meant. If "Volumen" in German is more complicated than the total value in currency of sold goods (i.e. output), then "sales volume" is too simple. Sales capacity speaks to the value of the output, the infrastructure of the company, market access, etc.
