@ Neil Well put. The term is not horticultura anyway, but hortofrutícula, so the horto probably refers to hortalizas rather than horticultura

In terms of usage, at least in the UK, "horticulture" refers more to flowers and ornamental plants than foodstuffs. In the food industry, "hortoFRUTIcola" refers to what is known as fruit and vegetable production/sector/packing/ etc. The etymological root or dictionary definition are secondary to its current usage in this case (to my way of thinking).

The question isn't if it has packing or doesn't. The question is it's property. I understand that a "central hortofrutícola" isn't a private corporate enterprise, a company, but instead a cooperative entity where the products of different producers (associates or partners) are processed, in this sense it is equivalent to a "centro de acopio" but with processing and packing facilities. So although it is a packing plant basically, it should have another name that reflects it's cooperative condition.

Yes, it's a question of produce (grown) vs. product (packaged, etc) then... and I think a production can be commercial (as in my example), but you found the best translation anyway, which is what matters ;) Thanks!

FYI I never said otherwise, this is going too far! I know it is a cooperative, I never mentioned any corporation, I live in the country, surrounded by farmers and co-ops, and the whole point of growing vegetables & fruits is (guess what) to sell them

disagree Simon Bruni : Sorry I have to disagree. Horticulture is to do with cultivation; this is a place where fruit and vegetables are packaged and distributed. The Oxford definition of 'horticulture': noun the art or practice of garden cultivation and management.
