This is in a doctor's CV. I get the impression that it comes in between being a 1. reservelaege (Senior Registrar) and a overlaege (Consultant). This is why I'm not sure about the translation of 'senior house officer' in Vinterberg & Bodelsen (SHO's are more junior than reservelaege in the UK). However, my medical contacts in the UK tell me that there isn't a grade between Senior Registrar and Consultant in the UK, so what how should I translate afdelingslaege?

In the US "an attending" or "attending physician" would be the equivalent. I know nothing about the term for the UK.

Comment: "Thank you all for your help. In the end I think it might be nearer the UK consultant post, and when we normally say consultant, maybe this should be senior consultant. Very difficult for me to say."

Don't know if this makes any sense? It should be semi-equivalent to 'senior house medical officer' according to my dictionary. 'Deputy superintendent' is supposedly sometimes used as well.
