Dutch term

grendelafsluiter

Dutch to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering
Aan de westelijke zijde bemerken we een opbouw koudwaterleiding met 2 grendelafsluiters met schroefkop zonder afsluitdop.

This word has me foxed. I'm having difficulty even visualising what this could be. This is a Belgian text so perhaps it's a word used only in Flemish. Google produces websites about guns (grendelafsluiter) and (bolt valve) about car engines. Any help would be much appreciated.
Proposed translations (English)
4 +2 latch valve

Discussion

Jack den Haan Nov 23, 2010:
I wouldn't be too specific, Kate. Why not simply a 'latched valve' or 'latchable valve'?
Kate Hudson (X) (asker) Nov 23, 2010:
Following suggestions I'm thinking that in a kitchen they would not fit a magnetically operated latch valve but might fit something like this: ball valve with latch lock handle

EHL Nov 23, 2010:
Which rest of the description? The picture looks like the description you posted, I can see a "schroefkop" and no "afsluitdop".
Kate Hudson (X) (asker) Nov 23, 2010:
The problem is that then the rest of the description doesn't make much sense.
Kate Hudson (X) (asker) Nov 23, 2010:
This piece of pipework is situated in a kitchen in office buildings. The term actually appears as grendelafsluiting, and there is no more context than that this is a building inventory. I wondered if they meant a shutoff valve that has a handle as in http://www.msadaqatcorp.com/detail.php?prodid=110
Jack den Haan Nov 23, 2010:
Locked valve? Possibly a locked valve, Kate. Would that fit your context?

latch valve

I think what is meant here is a (shut-off) valve "afsluiter" that is constructed with a latch "grendel", a common construction for piping.

Thank you.
agree Peter van der Hoek : latched valve sounds more natural (to me at least)

Thanks, although "latched valve" would rather indicate it has a latch attached /to/ it, not necessarily part of the actual function or construction.

latch lock / latch pipes

After som googling, I still haven't found anything and I have not got any more time. But I started thinking along the lines of a latch lock for a waterpipe, and found a picture of some latch pipes. Not sure if it will help. Good luck.
