Describing maintenance procedures on a valve for a gas cylinder:
"controllo *nottolino*: idem del nottolone;"
and this is what is done for the "nottolone":
There are answers in the glossary, but I am not certain that they fit.
"controllo *nottolone*: verificare che la guarnizione sia perfettamente integra ed in caso contrario sostituire il *nottolone*"

agree Mr Murray (X) : Probably just the 'pawl' (the little lever) that 'clicks' into place as the gear with teeth turns -- together, they form a rachet.

ratchet

A quick search makes me think it's the ratchet, but I have to admit that I'm not 100% sure. - It would make sense though.

neutral Mr Murray (X) : It could be the whole rachet, but for rachets, I think 'nottolino' alone is the 'pawl' piece/part. The problem for me to be sure is the "guarnizione" in the question text. But, this could be right as well.
