German term

Eingriffsicherheit

German to English Tech/Engineering Automation & Robotics Metering and automatic feed systems
Context:

"Ein Trichteraufbau der bezüglich Eingriffsicherheit EN_953 entspricht ist erforderlich."

What kind of Eingriff is meant here?

Discussion

Bernd Runge Oct 1, 2010:
@Robin Robin, sorry, I didn't intend to "classify" your answer. Actually, I was just trying to maintain the proper "level of differentiation" and prevent getting too "universal". Apologies.
Robin Salmon (X) Oct 1, 2010:
Abstract not concrete Yes, Bernd, I see you are right, when I take my time and look at it more carefully. I think it should be "safeguarding against access" or something similar.
phillee Oct 1, 2010:
Guard @BR I understand your point but I see nothing in David's description that would convince me that we are looking purely at preventing "reaching in" (but I may be wrong). "Eingriff" can mean intentional interference in a process or could also be interpreted as "durchgreifen" in the physical/manual sense.
IMHO A general term to cover both would be "access". "Guard" is not just an abstract verb it can also refer to a physical entity that protects from access by hand e.g. "fire-guard". These terms appear in the standard as well as frequntly in professional documents referring to the standard and are therefore applicable and relevant.
Bernd Runge Oct 1, 2010:

I guess I came in when Devos had just posted the answer, I had it already but was looking for a reference.

Sounds like the design is meant to stop people reaching into the machine.

often cap head screws are used for fastening lids or covers to avoid access with common tools of the trade, thus avoiding unauthorized access to areas of concern

prevent machine operators/workers from access to mechanical hazards.

Therefore, safety guards/protective guards to protect workers from mechanical hazards must be installed. Here is an excerpt of EN_953:

Eingriff bedeuted hier Eingriff in den Gefahrbereich

Safety of machinery – Guards – General requirements for the design and construction of fixed and movable guards

This European Standard specifies general requirements for the design and construction of guards provided primarily to protect persons from mechanical hazards. The standard applies primarily to machines which are manufactured after the date of issue of this standard. Attention is drawn to the use of guards to minimize exposure to non-mechanical hazards. The requirements are applicable if fixed and movable guards are used. The standard does not cover those parts of guards which actuate interlocking devices. These are covered in EN 1088. This standard does not provide requirements for special systems relating specifically to mobility and ability to lift loads like rollover protective structures (ROPS) and falling-object protective structures (FOPS).

Includes the Amendment 1 of 2009.

access guards

"... provide access guards compliant with BS EN 953 ... "
References to the English version of EN 953 by suppliers mostly use the word guard and access.
"Tampering" would suggest intentional interference with the machinery. These guards are there to prevent both unintentional and intentional access.

preventing entry/access

During normal machining operations access to the work zone should be prevented by fixed and/or interlocked guards (Figure 1).

Physical guarding which prevents access to the danger zone, or safety devices which cause the machine to stop before hazardous parts can be reached are the recommended options.
