गर्भपात (abortion) अक्सर लोग तब कराते हैं जब उन्हें बच्चे की इच्छा नहीं होती। इसके अलावा भारत जैसे देश में कुछ इलाकों में लड़के की चाहत में भी गर्भपात करा दिया जाता है जब होने वाले माता-पिता को पता चल जाता है कि गर्भ में लड़की है। एक औऱ स्थिति में जब पता चल जाए कि गर्भ में पल रहे बच्चे को कोई गंभीर बीमारी है तब भी गर्भपात करा दिया जाता है। दूसरी ओर मिसकैरिएज किसी दुर्घटनावश गर्भपात हो जाना।
