French to English
Tech/Engineering

this is definitely a tool for tiling but not too sure of the English
next phrase is also lame de grattoir a joints
is this some sort of scraper for the tiles? to scrape the junctures or corners of the tiles?

: Forgive me if I am being foolish, but is "scie" not the common and standard translation for "saw"???

I do not pay attention to the translation of individual words; I just know that "grattoir à joints" and "grout saw" name the same thing. See links in discussion.

: As in so many specialist fields, names do not always translate literally / oo right! I remember once trying to explain to the old lady in a German corner shop that I wanted 'custard powder'. After much laughing, she did eventually have something similar!

Thanks Tony; we only learn these translations when we go to a store and ask for "A de B", to be given "X à Y". I recall, it took me a good 10 minutes to explain and finally draw on paper the part I wanted. They gave me a "Chapeau de gendarme".

If you Google grout scraper you'll find talk of blades too.

Of course on small tiling projects the end of a pencil is pretty good after wiping over with a sponge

Discussion
would 'lame de grattoir a joints' just be the grout saw blade then? thanks
Seriously, I have never heard anyone use other names for this tool besides "grout saw". If you go to a store and ask for a "grout scraper", they will stare at you. Test it in google:
"grout scraper": 941 results
"grout saw": 63,400 results
Could be I suppose

In fact, I bought them both at Home Depot and at Brico Dépôt, as I recall.
The tool is used to remove the old grout from the tile joints or to widen the joints where they are too narrow for grouting.
No, it is not a trowel. Trowels are used for spreading stuff; "grattoir" is a grinder, but we call it a saw.
Thanks.
