Discussion

Owen Witesman Jun 20, 2010:
And the r And the 'r' is an alveolar tap (a short alveolar trill). The exact position of pronunciation (from alveolar to dental) varies a bit, but the sound is always similar.
Alfa Trans (X) Jun 20, 2010:
Finnish vowels can be short or long. In the word Haukivuori both the "i" vowels are short, like in "kilo". The long "i" would be spelt "ii".

How-key-voo-oh-ree

Emphasis on the first syllable.

How--the word 'how'
key--the word 'key'
voo--rhymes with 'boo'
oh--the word 'oh'
ree--rhymes with 'key'

The vowels in the third and fourth parts I identified actually form a diphthong so they should be run together somewhat.

Secondary stress on the 'voo'--it's a compound word (Hauki=Pike, Vuori=mountain). In Finnish, stress is at the beginning of the word, and in compounds this still holds.

The i's are short and the r is trilled (alveolar tap).
