From a work reference for somebody who worked for an auto company in Germany. He worked on the development of '5- Gang-Automatgetriebe' which I take to be '5 speed automatic transmissions'. Is that what the 'Stufen' is referring to?

: Yes, 'stepped' is used in this context, however, in context with a number, it is "speed" as in "5-speed" transmission
