German term

Stufen

German to English Tech/Engineering Automotive / Cars & Trucks
Herr Schmidt war als Versuchsingenieur im Bereich Versuch PKW-Stufen-Automatgetriebe in unserem Werk tätig.

From a work reference for somebody who worked for an auto company in Germany. He worked on the development of '5- Gang-Automatgetriebe' which I take to be '5 speed automatic transmissions'. Is that what the 'Stufen' is referring to?
Proposed translations (English)
5 +2 stepped automatic gearbox (or transmission)

agree Richard Stephen : Yes, 'stepped' is used in this context, however, in context with a number, it is "speed" as in "5-speed" transmission
