Spanish term

tecnica electiva

Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Education / Pedagogy
I'm translating a transcript of academic record issued by La Universidad de El Salvador. Some course titles are followed by the abbreviation T.E., which stands for "tecnica electiva".
How should I render it into English? Is "elective" enough?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Discussion

Darius Saczuk (asker) Apr 26, 2010:
Context The student majored in Information Technology.
Jessica Noyes Apr 26, 2010:
Does the context imply that this could be an elective on "technique", as for a music degree? Thus "technique elective" perhaps? Or are the course names technical in nature? If so, it may be important to add the word "technical", as there may be other electives that are, say, theoretical, and they want to distinguish between them. So context is key, I think.
Darius Saczuk (asker) Apr 26, 2010:
OK Thanks, speakspan.
Alex Aruj Apr 26, 2010:
Elective would be OK in American English, but the "technical" aspect may suggest an elective that's well, more serious or technical.

elective (n.)

We used to call them "electives" in college. Courses outside your "major" (specialization).

An elective might be confined to a specific school or area (e.g., a "science(s) elective", a "humanities elective", or a "social science(s) elective" were the three main types at my college).

Or an elective might be in any area: a "free elective".
