OK, then I suggest you leave out the first part and only use "to save your own life". Ex: You wouldn't be able to do it to save your own life.

: This expression means that there is a little hope this person will/did come back quickly, most likely he/she would go wikedly to visit his/her friends on the way or drop in some other places, expression is about waiting, not about that person being slow.
