Some thoughts, a bit convoluted.
Please, no mail to tell me I am a bigot.
1) Generally speaking, homosexuals are identified with an unusual and eccentric lifestyle (i.e. the question about the proposal of marriage in the middle of nowhere).
2) "to trash bag" (and maybe by inference "to garbage bag") is, according to Urbandictionary "an Australian invented word but a global concept. A trash bag is one who engages in excessive behaviour while partying and generally makes a disgrace of themselves - in a good way" (I cannot imagine pairing "disgrace" and "good way"). Trash bagging doesn't involve just alcohol. It is a way of life."
3) to garbage someone means to get rid, dispose of him (I don't think it applies to your situation).
So, we have two individuals with an uncommon relationship, a peculiar way of living, who enjoy doing things out of the ordinary. Could then your "20 ltr garbage bag" refer to an excessive way of living?
No matter what, you are left with an almost "non-translatable" (new word I just created for the occasion) text. Good luck. You'll need it.

A 20-liter garbage bag is not that big, you wouldn't be able to fit a body in it (is one of those for kinda small bins), but you'd definitely be able to fit a head in it. In my opinion "going back to use 20-liter garbage bags" might mean "going back to hide from everyone again" (also because before one of the two asks if "you also take me to the middle of nowhere when you ask for my hand", AWAY from everyone).
Maybe something like: "e se ricominciamo a uscire col sacchetto in testa?", sai, come quando uno a vergogna nei cartoni e si mette il sacchetto di carta e ci fa i buchi per occhi e bocca =)

I think you should look up the definitions of the names and make your own coclusions.
If they think they are weird then probably they just want to shut themselves in and leave the world out, and to do this they probably need bigger garbage bags to avoid going out often.
