German term
Schmelzfilm/Schmelztablette
German to English
Medical
Medical: Pharmaceuticals
Term comes up several times in a regulatory Behördenbrief:
"Bitte begründen Sie, warum die Zerfallzeit des Schmelzfilms nicht vergesehen ist"
Nothing more to go on I'm afraid. Schmelztablette also crops up a few time, for which I've found "fast-melt tablet", but don't know if the Schmelzfilm is somthing that is applied to this type of tablet, or used for something entirely different.
Thanks in advance for your help.

orodispersible coating/orodispersible tablet (OD tablet, ODT)
"Schmelztablette": A tablet that melts in the mouth, i.e. is not swallowed as a whole. (This cannot be achieved by using a special film coating alone, but the tablet might need a special coating ["Schmelzfilm"] in order not to disintegrate even before it reaches the mouth or to release an agent that desensitizes the oral senses to the unpleasant taste of the tablet itself.)
Example sentence:
The pharmaceutical composition according to the invention is formed especially by an orodispersible central core comprising agomelatine, and an orodispersible coating.

Note from asker:
Thanks for the tip. These pills are indeed called "orodispersible tablets", which I was able to confirm with a bit of googling. But I'm still up in the air about the Schmelzfilm bit, as I can't find anything convincing, e.g. 'orodispersible film' or similar. |

meltable film/meltable tablet
I would expect that the "meltable film" is applied as a coating to the tablet, which melts in the mouth and releases the active ingredients.

: as with the slogan "M&M's melt in your mouth, not in your hand"

or fast-melting; but according to the link above, 'fast-dissolving' also refers in most cases to tablets that melt in the mouth:
Even with these differences, most of the existing fast-dissolving drug delivery systems are in the form of solid tablets and designed to dissolve/disintegrate in the patient's mouth within a few seconds or minutes, without the need to drink or chew

: This could be confused with tablets which dissolve quickly when added to a glass of water, whereas "Schmelztablette" refers to a tablet which melts in the mouth (i.e. directly, without adding water)

Yes, melting might be a better choice here

ODFs, orally disintegrating films, orally dissolving films, orodispersible films
Oral zerfallende Filme (”orodispersible films”, ODF) werden im Bereich der Pharmazie verwendet, um dem Körper Wirkstoffe über die Mundschleimhaut und den Magen-Darmtrakt systemisch zur Verfügung zu stellen.

Do the same rules as outlined for orodispersible tablets also apply to oral dispersible films?
Orodispersible films may be handled in a similar way as ODTs.

0051]As used herein, the terms "ODF," "orally dissolving film," and "orally disintegrating film" are used synonymously and mean that the film dissolves, melts, disintegrates, liquefies, etc. in the oral cavity such that substantially all of the memantine no longer remains in a formulation form.

Today, pharmaceutical companies show heightened interest in reformulating their existing drugs into new dosage forms, and the strategy has many arguments in its favor. One relatively new dosage form is the orally dissolving strip, a thin film formulated with hydrophilic polymers that rapidly dissolves on the tongue. This format is currently used for some therapeutic products such as Novartis’s (Basel) “Triaminic” cold-relief treatment.
