French term

étampe

French to English Tech/Engineering Engineering (general) fine watch-making
I am translating the resume of a fine watch-maker. This term appears in several of this person's roles and responsibilities:

contrôle des plans CAO (conception, dessin, suivi fabrication nouvelle étampe)

mise en place de la gestion des stocks d'éléments standards pour montage d'étampe et du stock matières

Expert étampes (2001 - 2005)
- gestion et suivi des outils de découpage

Agent méthodes et étampeur

I'm not sure of the best way to translate this a watch-making context (die? stamp? matrix?). I know this term appears elsewhere in kudoz, but not in this particular context and I get very few hits for my ideas on google so am worried they are not right.

stamping (tool)

I am not a specialist in this field, but a translator is only as good as their ability to understand the text they are translating and their ability to research the material. I believe we are talking about a cutting tool.

agree Bourth (X) : Though I suspect it may actually be the die.

swage

This is the definition from the Illustrated Professional Dictionary of Horlogery

SWAGE, PRESS-TOOL n. Tool for stamping, swaging. Swage for watch-cases. Blanking-swage, truing-swage, etc. The swage is a precision tool that has revolutionized the mechanical production of watches; it enables most of the parts of a watch to be formed, pierced, trued and blanked.
The swage is formed of two main parts, the punch and the die. These two parts are fixed into blocks, one of which slides on pillars (pillar die-sets used in presses).

embossed

This is from the Selva catalogue (my ex-husbands bible, he was an atique watch enthusiast!)

If you type "étampe" into the French search box and then transfer to the English site, that is what you get.

disagree SueE : I have to say that I think this is a mis-translation on the site. I really can't reconcile "étampé" ("stamped") and "embossed", they are surely two different processes.
