Italian to English Medical Certificates, Diplomas, Licenses, CVs Academic titles
This term appears in the CV of a doctor associated with a clinical research study. The CV lists all of this person's degrees and specializations, and then says:

Nel [year] e' stato nominato dal Preside della [university] *Cultore della Materia* per la disciplina ... [specialization area].

What's this gentleman's new honor, and how would we say it in English? This has been asked and answered once in a KudoZ question (2005), but I'm not convinced that it gives the right translation.

(I like what my dictionary gives for a similar term -- 'cultore di lettere': "man of letters" -- but it doesn't help me enough with this term).

Honorary fellow In the UK we would probably say "honorary fellow", but I'm not sure if it's the same in the US. My dictionary gives a very long-winded translation of "cultore della materia": non-faculty member using his expertise within the university setting on a volunteer basis.

Honorary fellow I would probably go for the glossary entry - it appears to be vague enough to not be exclusive - can be used for persons internal and external to the faculty, teaching and non-teaching staff alike - and gives the idea of special knowledge or contribution to the field.

I have seen this term used often, this implies an always paid position, however, if it is for research then it could be research fwllow
