I do not agree with the definition "marinheiro" in this instant as often, the term "boatman" can be applied to inland or "fluvial" operators, which case "marinheiro" would not be applicable, it could be "operador", "comandante" etc which again,"marinheiro" would not be applicable.

I doubt u will find a specific word for this transaltion, if u do, I wud like to know, I wish u luck in yr due diligence!
Steamboatman, in itself is a very old term, just how many boats or ships are there nower days driven by steam?
"Barqueiro", as a single word fits the bill.This is the actual translation of boatman, whether it be a steam or motor driven boat.I would be most interested in the doc u are translating, as I said this is a very old term,but quite normal, there are many shipping docments used to today, that have amazingly old terms used like "cannon" and "cannon balls" which can be found in some Bills of Lading.
