Но "отрабатывать" имеет еще значение "упражняться на практике", "использовать на практике".

Возможно, у Аскера именно такой смысловой оттенок.

Если же это именно "опробовать", то я со всеми согласен, кроме, м.б. work out.

Есть еще вариации на тему \"отточить\" (если это помогало улучшить методы): to improve, perfect, rectify и т. д., очень много синонимов.

Хочу заметить, что предложенные мной варианты не синонимичны, и все зависит от того, в каком смысле употреблено слово "отрабатывать" в исходном тексте.

Кроме того, хороший вариант перевода получится, если Вы немного перефразируете исходную фразу, употребив слово "полигон". Что-нибудь вроде:
..эти задачи использовались в качестве полигона для...
