Dear collegues,
I am currently translating academic article about sociology of religion under the Communist rule in Czechoslovakia. Given the topic of the text, reference to the Church(es)/church(es) abounds within the text. As a non-native English speaker I am a bit unsure about when I should capitalize the initial letter of the word and when not. I would thus appreciate your opinion and insight on the matter.
For example, when there is a reference to a specific "církev", e.g. katolická církev, I would write: Catholic Church with capital letters.
However, how would I proceed in the following sentence:
"Bylo třeba zkoumat rozdíly v religiozitě českých zemí a Slovenska, diskutovalo se o státních příspěvcích církvím, o církevním majetku a školách, ..."
In other words, when there is reference to a specific Church, I am comfortable about writing a capital letter at the beginning. However, when the reference is made to the C/church as a whole (the sum of all C/hurches) and when the word is used in its adjective form, then I am unsure about what is the correct practice.

Pokud bych překládal takový text jak uvádíte, překládal bych jej stejně, tedy konkrétní církev s velkými písmeny a pokud se bude jednat o církev jako takovou, tedy obecně, malé písmeno.
Záležet bude pravděpodobně na příjemci, pro koho je text určen.
Obecně je zde jedna skutečnost, kterou věda není schopna pojmout (píšete o tom, že se jedná o vědecký text) a tou je, že věda se sice na církev dívá jako na sociální instituci, což je možné, ale toto pojetí ji není schopné pojmout v celé její šíři, protože církev je Božím zřízením a ne lidskou institucí.
Z toho v konečném důsledku plyne, že jakýkoli zvolený styl překladu může být považován za správný nebo nesprávný, vždy dle pohledu čtenáře.
Proto bych se klonil k nejobecnějšímu řešení, které je právě to, které navrhujete.
Prostředí církví znám velmi důvěrně a dokumenty se v tomto prostředí píší nejčastěji tak jak navrhujete.

Catholic Church-katolicka cirkev je pojem casto zamienany s katolictvom. C.Ch.- refers to the Roman Catholic Ch.
Greek C.Ch.- refers to the Eastern Catholic Churches. www.en or cz.wikipedia.org. Pre nedostatok miesta zatial len tolko.
