Spanish term

la carretera se interna

Spanish to English Art/Literary Tourism & Travel
This is talking about a ravine or gorge.

Un poco al norte de esta población, después de lxhuatán, la carretera se interna en la Garganta del Diablo, en cuyo fondo corre el río de la Sierra. A la garganta se precipitan varias pequeñas cascadas.

Another option, as one supposes the depth from the description that follows.

Some examples in English using "gorge" and canyon": "Therefore, it is strongly advised not enter the gorge during or just after periods of prolonged heavy rainfall. http://wikitravel.org/en/Taroko_Gorge; "State Route 89A enters the canyon on its north end via a series of hairpin turns before traversing the bottom of the canyon for about 13 miles (20.8 kilometers) until the highway enters the town of Sedona." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oak_Creek_Canyon. Both are wiki sites but I found many more in a Google search. "Road" or "highway", in any case, based on your perception of the width and state of the "carretera".

I write articles about rural tourism for a Spanish language magazine and I just finished an article about a zone in the Pyrenees that has a lot of hairpin-turn roads that run through gorges so I had a clear image. At some points the level of the road is not that much higher than the level of the river (that in Spain varies widely from one season to another). I hope I've been helpful.
Note from asker:
Thanks, Jenni! I think your right. I wanted to see what others thought, but as I understand it, the road is above the gorge (why build in the bottom of a gorge with waterfalls pouring into it and a flowing river at the very bottom?)
Thanks again, Jenni. Very helpful!!

Oxford Dictionary: internarse: go deep into.
